How to have a safe, sunny summer!

The Mississippi Gulf Coast is hot right now! 😎

It's officially astronomical summer! Although daylight gets shorter after the summer solstice, temps keep rising through July and August. That sends us all chasing the sun and shade simultaneously in this season.

Heat Advisory and Excessive Heat Warning are some of the weather statements you may see issued for the Mississippi Gulf Coast. But don't rely on those alone. Each person's body is different and is affected by temperature and humidity in its own way. Especially if you are not used to living in this climate, listen to how you are feeling and thinking.

Overheating is no joke.

In extreme heat, your body gradually has trouble cooling itself and maintaining an electrolyte balance. The symptoms seem appear suddenly, but heat exhaustion or heat stroke has already been in progress.

Prepare accordingly for your day outdoors.

If you are planning to bring along pets, infants, or anyone else who may have trouble keeping cool, consider making other arrangements for them indoors.

  • Sip cool water and electrolyte drinks with minimal sugar. Even salty pickles can help!

  • Stay under shaded spaces as much as possible.

  • Limit time in direct sun to 15-30 minute periods.

  • Monitor those who may be distracted such as adults drinking alcohol and children.

  • Make sure your dog isn't drinking salty sea water. This can lead to illness and dehydration regardless of outside temps.

  • And remember, the pool or ocean you're swimming in is likely 85+ degrees F. Even being immersed in warm water for a very long time can be too warming.

If anyone exhibits weakness, headache, vomiting, heart palpitations, or other uncharacteristic traits, follow these guidelines immediately.

Call 911 if a heat-affected person's/dog's condition does not improve quickly.

Now go enjoy the best of this season!
